SolTrans Drives Toward Zero Emissions: A Progress Update

Mandi Renshaw

SolTrans is making significant strides in its commitment to environmental sustainability with its ongoing transition toward 100% zero emissions fleet. Since breaking ground on the electrical charging infrastructure at the Operations and Maintenance Facility in April 2023, the agency has been steadfast in its efforts to upgrade infrastructure and expand its fleet of electric vehicles.

In June 2023, SolTrans secured a substantial grant of $12.5 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The funds are earmarked for acquiring 14 state-of-the-art electric buses and essential charging infrastructure. This investment marks a pivotal moment in SolTrans’ journey toward a greener future.

As of now, the infrastructure project, initially slated for completion by early May 2024, has encountered some delays due to permit acquisition and supply chain challenges. However, progress continues, with underground work nearing completion and essential components such as piers and transformers being installed.

Patricia Carr, General Services Manager and the electrification infrastructure Project Manager is optimistic about the project’s timeline, aiming for construction to wrap up by early August. PG&E’s final inspection, crucial for system activation, is anticipated to occur by the end of September, pending scheduling availability.

Upon completion of construction and a successful inspection, SolTrans will be poised to introduce its new fleet of electric buses onto Benicia and Vallejo streets. With a scalable infrastructure capable of accommodating up to 26 charging stations, SolTrans is well-positioned to expand its zero-emission fleet in the future as funding becomes available.

SolTrans’ dedication to sustainability and innovation, coupled with the leadership of individuals like Pat Carr, underscores the agency’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public service. Watch for the exciting debut of SolTrans’ electric buses, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward cleaner, greener transportation in Benicia, Vallejo, and beyond.
