Healthy Transit: Face Masks

Mandi Renshaw

Face masks are required on SolTrans buses. Please Mask Up!

We continue discussing healthy transit practices and the precautions we’ve taken to ensure our passengers and operators are safe waiting for, boarding, riding and exiting our buses. This week we discuss face masks.

The primary role of a face mask is to reduce the release of infectious particles into the air when someone speaks, coughs or sneezes, including someone who has COVID-19 but feels well. Covering your face is about helping others. By covering your face when you go out for essential reasons, you are protecting vulnerable community members. Solano Public Health has more information about proper facial coverings and where they should be worn.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an Order that requires face masks to be worn by all travelers while on public transportation (which includes all passengers and all operational personnel). Passengers must wear masks that completely covers both the mouth and nose while awaiting, boarding, disembarking, or traveling on airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares. The mask requirement also includes transportation hubs (e.g., transit centers, airports, bus or ferry terminals, train and subway stations).

The following categories of people are exempt from the requirement to wear a face mask:

  • A child under the age of 2 years;
  • A person with a disability who cannot wear a mask, or cannot safely wear a mask, because of the disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq.);
  • A person for whom wearing a mask would create a risk to workplace health, safety, or job duty as determined by the relevant workplace safety guidelines or federal regulations.
